Unlike food and pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US. Therefore, it is left up to individual companies to ensure the safety and efficacy of their product before it is sold to consumers. As you may have anticipated, some companies are better at this than others. 

In 2020, creatine monohydrate was deemed generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA due to its extensive testing. However, supplements typically contain ingredients other than the active ingredient to act as flavorings and fillers to make the product more palatable. 

Artificial vs. Natural Flavors 

When it comes to food labeling, it can be quite difficult for consumers to know what is what. What does it mean when a product says “no artificial flavors or colors”? Artificial and natural additives are actually quite similar in chemical properties and are both typically processed in a lab, but natural flavorings must be initially derived from a plant or animal product. According to nutrition experts, just because one product uses a combination of natural and artificial flavors doesn’t make it any less healthy from a nutritional standpoint. 

Certifications

You may notice some companies choose to add certification seals to their product. These often indicate that the product, company, or manufacturer has been tested and evaluated by a third party. They also may be used to signify a product is acceptable for vegans, vegetarians, or those with an allergy.

I assume most people dislike the flavor of something that has a hint of chemicals or a synthetic aftertaste. Therefore, I also based my rankings for flavor on how much or how little an “artificial taste” came through in the gummy. 

Texture

Texture is another important facet of how enjoyable a gummy supplement is to consume. The perfect gummy is easy to chew but doesn’t immediately dissipate in your mouth. On the contrary, I don’t appreciate an overly chewy or rubbery texture in a gummy either. 

Effectiveness

With a product like creatine, it takes at least 28 days for someone’s muscles to become fully saturated with creatine and to expect to see noticeable results. Therefore, these gummies were evaluated on their potential for efficacy based on whether or not they included an acceptable dose of creatine. For creatine, this is based on the recommendation set by the International Society for Sports Nutrition (ISSN) of 3-5g. 

Value for Money 

No one really wants to do math in their head when trying to choose a supplement, so I’ve broken it down for you in the price comparison table above. My favorite brand for facilitating consistency would be Beava since they have a nice and convenient supplement bottle to carry them in. I actually didn’t mind these, and although they’re fairly similar to Swoly, they’re a little bit sweeter. They tend to have the same texture as Swoly Gummies. I feel like this might be a great choice if you just want a daily creatine gummy brand that’s simple and easy to consume.

Swoly creatine gummies have a nice strawberry flavor. They’re not super sour, but I thought there was a tiny bit of a tinge that tasted like artificial sweetener, but nothing major. I could definitely see myself having these on a regular basis. It wouldn’t be like I’d need to have any particular time to take them; I could just pop a couple whenever, as they are quite tasty. They hold their shape pretty well, and they’re in the shape of a gummy bear which I find fun.

Effectiveness

Taking five gummies per day will achieve the recommended dosage of 4 grams of creatine per day. If you struggle to consistently take supplements, Swoly gummies may help ease you into better supplementation habits to increase your creatine intake.

My favorite product for fun would be Beast Bites as they have a great flavor and a different color than most other creatine gummies. Beast Bites’s gummies were pretty tasty. There’s not any apparent artificial sweetener flavor. They kind of taste like a slightly more sour version of blue whales–meaning the 5-cent blue whale candies if you’re familiar. They are a little bit smaller than Swoly gummies, but they’re kind of fun as they are a different color and a lot of these companies are using strawberry as a flavor. Therefore, as far as gummies for adults are concerned, I consider them fun. 

Effectiveness 

Beast Bites contain the recommended amount for most people at 5 grams per serving deeming them an effective creatine supplement.

What Are Creatine Gummies?

Creatine gummies are an alternative form of a creatine supplement that can be taken any time of day, though some labels may recommend a specific timing, like around a workout. The recommended daily dose of creatine is 3–5 milligrams per day to reap notable benefits like increased muscle mass and enhanced exercise performance. 

Creatine 101

Creatine Structure

The substance creatine is found naturally in muscle cells and is made up of amino acids, primarily glycine and arginine. Roughly half of the creatine in the body comes from food, mostly animal products, and the remaining is produced in the liver and kidneys. 

Monohydrate vs. Creatine HCL

There are two main types of creatine supplements — creatine monohydrate and creatine hydrochloride. On the outside, there appears to be no difference in the two since their differences lie at a molecular level which affects how they are absorbed and used by the body. 

Like in the name, creatine monohydrate is creatine + a water molecule (monohydrate). 

Creatine hydrochloride is creatine + a hydrochloride molecule (HCL).

Creatine monohydrate supplements may require a loading phase, meaning you pump your body with creatine for a short period, typically around a week, to increase water absorption into the muscle at a faster rate. A loading phase would be difficult to complete only using gummies. However, creatine loading isn’t always necessary. You can still reach full muscle saturation just by taking a daily dose of 3-5g, it will just take about 2-3 weeks longer of consistent supplementation. 

An HCL supplement does not require any loading and the dosage is lower since the hydrochloride molecule increases water absorption into the muscle much easier and faster. While this enhanced route to muscle gains may be great for professional bodybuilders, for most athletes, creatine monohydrate does the job perfectly. 

The right supplement will vary depending on individual goals; however, creatine monohydrate is considered safer due to extensive research and testing, is efficacious for a wider range of athletes, is easier to find, and is less expensive. 

Pros and Cons of Creatine Gummies

The main drawback to using gummies or chewables instead of other forms of creatine is the ease of use. You don’t need to mix gummies with anything or wince as you choke down a less-than-desirable taste of a powder or pill. Gummies are easy candy-like chewables you can pop on the go.

However, convenience can come with a caveat. Gummies labeled as “sugar-free” use low-calorie artificial sweeteners like sugar alcohols, which may cause gastrointestinal issues like gas and bloating. Additionally, creatine gummies are typically more expensive compared to other forms of creatine due to the added ingredients and extra manufacturing costs that go into creating a chewable. 

Alternatives to Creatine Gummies 

Like many supplements, creatine comes in various capsules, tablets, or pill forms. Though some don’t appreciate the taste, powders are still a popular option for those wanting to use creatine because they can be added to drinks and smoothies and can come in flavored varieties. On average, creatine powder is the most cost-effective compared to gummies or tablets.

Another alternative to a creatine supplement is a pre-workout supplement. While this is not the case for all pre-workouts, many of these products come with added benefits and contain creatine as an added bonus.
