How We Chose the Best Creatine Supplements

Third-Party Testing

Unlike other pharmaceuticals and food products, dietary supplements don’t require FDA approval before they hit the market. This can lead to products lacking credibility or containing compounds or ingredients that are unsafe for consumption or banned substances. However, companies in the supplement industry can choose to have their products reviewed and tested by a third party. This increases their credibility with consumers.

As a Registered Dietitian, safety and credibility are of utmost importance, which is why I chose to evaluate the different creatine supplements available on Amazon first by their quality standards and level of third-party testing. USADA currently recognizes NSF Certified for Sport® as the best program to ensure safety for athletes, so the brands I chose which ranked the highest are NSF Certified for Sport®.

If you want to know if your supplements are NSF Certified for Sport®, look for the NSF logo, use their search tool, or download the app.

NSF Certification Procedure

Ingredients

After identifying the risk level of the supplement, I evaluated them based on their ingredients list. Those with longer ingredient lists, including artificial colors and flavors, ranked lower.

Price Per Serving

We can’t deny that price plays a large role when choosing a supplement, especially if it’s something you’ll be taking daily. I evaluated each supplement based on the overall price, price per serving, and price per day based on the recommended dose.

What is Creatine?

Barbell exercise paired with creatine for strength and energy

Creatine is a naturally occurring compound and is one of the most well-studied and popular supplements for athletic performance. It is an organic compound, found mostly in our muscles, that plays a role in energy production during exercise.

We can get creatine by consuming animal proteins (meat, seafood, animal milk), and our body also produces about 1g of creatine each day on its own. Taking creatine supplements increases our baseline levels of creatine, meaning we can delay fatigue longer and increase overall performance. Creatine monohydrate is the most researched form of the supplement.

The amount of creatine you choose to supplement with will depend on your training goals and phase. Some people choose to increase their dosing during a creatine loading phase and then decrease it during the creatine maintenance phase.

Factors to Consider When Choosing the Best Creatine on Amazon

Before choosing a product you should reflect on what your training goals are, what your budget is, and what lifestyle factors will affect your choice. Think about:

  • What does my training regime look like?
  • How much am I willing to spend each day on supplements?
  • Do I need something fast and convenient like a gummy, or do I have the time to make powdered drinks?
  • Do I have any dietary restrictions or dietary preferences I need to accommodate?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Best Creatine Supplement?

The best creatine supplement will vary by individual based on your goals and needs. Creatine monohydrate is the most well-studied for its positive effects on overall performance and muscle growth.

What are the Benefits of Creatine?

During a workout, we use phosphocreatine in our muscles to quickly regenerate the energy compound, adenosine triphosphate (ATP). As phosphocreatine decreases so does our energy, making our muscles fatigued. Supplementing with creatine monohydrate will increase your baseline stores of phosphocreatine, meaning you can delay this fatigue longer and improve your performance. The combination of resistance training and creatine supplementation leads to increased overall performance in the gym, and muscle growth will follow.

Is Creatine Safe and Are There Any Potential Side-Effects to Taking it?

Creatine is one of the most well-studied supplements for athletic performance and many peer-reviewed studies have established its safety. Be sure to always take the supplement according to the product directions and consult a healthcare professional if you have additional questions or concerns.

One side effect of creatine can be weight gain because it can cause water retention. Some people also experience dehydration and stomach discomfort.
